Super Kings Player Tracker: All seven new JSK signings are on the Super Kings Player Tracker: Gous, Faf, Muzarabani, Galiem, Pollard, Rowles and wildcard Overton.

Hello Yellow Army! The SA20 Season 5 auction is done, and Joburg Super Kings did what they said they would: they went shopping with the biggest purse in the room. Six players bought for R8.975 million, a Jamie Overton wildcard on top, and a few big names, including a Faf reunion and a Kieron Pollard in yellow. Let's go through it.

If you read our auction preview, some of this will look familiar, and some of it won't.

All JSK Signings

PlayerPriceWho he is
Jason RowlesR2.90 million18-year-old all-rounder, South Africa U19 player, U23 slot
Faf du PlessisR2.70 millionOpener, back at JSK after being released
Kieron PollardR1.5 millionWest Indies all-rounder, now 39
Andries GousR1 millionUSA wicketkeeper-batter and opener
Blessing MuzarabaniR500,000Zimbabwe fast bowler
Dayyaan GaliemR375,000Cheap pick at the end of the list
Jamie OvertonWildcardFast-bowling all-rounder, confirmed after the auction

JSK walked in with R20.6 million, so the six auction buys cost them less than half of it. The wildcard sits outside the cap.

Jason Rowles, R2.90 million: the Most Expensive One

The big names got most of the talk, but the most dramatic moment of the auction belonged to an 18-year-old. Jason Rowles, the highly rated Under-23 prospect, set off a proper bidding battle between MI Cape Town and JSK, and both teams clearly saw his long-term potential. JSK won it at R2.90 million, which made him the most expensive player of the whole auction, ahead of Faf (R2.70 million) and Wiaan Mulder (R2.6 million, who went to MI Cape Town). His base price was only R200,000. And he isn't just any teenager: he's a matric pupil at St David's Marist Inanda in Johannesburg, a local boy who came through the Schools SA20 pathway. SA20 commissioner Graeme Smith called him one of the highlights of the auction. That's a lot of money for a schoolboy, but there's a reason: only JSK and MI Cape Town had an U23 slot left, so the two of them were always going to fight.

In the preview, I had him as a backup U23 name: a South Africa U19 all-rounder. So yes, I liked him, but I didn't expect him to be the biggest ticket of the whole auction.

Faf du Plessis, R2.70 million: the Reunion

Funny how this goes. JSK let Faf go in August, and now they have bought him back for R2.70 million, after a bidding war with their rivals MI Cape Town. So he wasn't a simple reunion: JSK had to fight for him, which tells you how badly they wanted him. He led the side as captain before, and JSK still don't have a captain for this season, so you can guess where everybody's mind went.

He's not exactly resting either: he was bought by Dubai Capitals for ILT20 on 1 October, and he played for Texas Super Kings in MLC 2026. Faf has been busy! Is he captain again? Nothing is confirmed, so let's wait for JSK to say it.

Kieron Pollard, R1.5 million: the Big Statement

Now this is the one that made me smile. In the preview, I wrote that I doubted JSK would go for him, because MI Cape Town would obviously target their own legend. Well, I was wrong. JSK picked him up at R1.5 million and nobody else bid, and he's leaving MI to do it.

West Indies superstar, T20 royalty, and now a Super King. Pollard is one of the highest run-scorers in men's T20 history, and JSK have him for R1.5 million. If you want power-hitting, cool-headed game management and a winner's habit, he brings all three: a man who has lifted trophy after trophy in this format knows exactly how to close out a game.

He's a Mumbai Indians legend and a long-time arch-rival of the Super Kings, so yes, it's a bit funny to see him in our colours. He's 39, but the numbers are still there: more than 1,100 runs since August 2025 across the CPL, MLC and ILT20, and a strike rate of 171 for MI Cape Town in the SA20. For R1.5 million, a finisher who has hit a few sixes against us in the past? I'll take that. If you can't beat him, buy him.

And he's earned that line. Against Super Kings teams (CSK, Texas and JSK) he has scored 845 runs at an average of 36.73 and a strike rate of 167.99, taken 15 wickets and won 5 Player of the Match awards. The knockout games are where he hurt us most:

  • 27 (10) in the 2010 IPL final
  • 60* (32) in the 2013 IPL final
  • 41 (17) in the 2015 IPL Qualifier 1
  • 36 (18) in the 2015 IPL final
  • 41* (25) in the 2019 IPL final
  • 47* (22) in the 2025 MLC Challenger

A Super Kings nightmare for years, and now he's on our side. After all that damage, we deserve at least one trophy from him for the Super Kings. Consider it compensation. 😄

Andries Gous, R1 million: the Best Value Buy?

Gous was my Plan A for the opener's slot, and JSK got him at exactly his R1 million reserve price. I think this is the smartest buy on the list.

He keeps wicket, and he opens. He was the leading run-scorer in MLC 2026 with 547 runs at a strike rate of about 165 for Washington Freedom, and he scored an unbeaten 90 off 61 balls to win the ETPL final. A younger, aggressive opener who also has the gloves: that's the "modern Faf" idea from the preview. It's just that now JSK can have both.

Blessing Muzarabani, R500,000: the Fast Bowler

Muzarabani is Zimbabwe's fast bowler, bought at R500,000. Being from Zimbabwe helps here: he knows South African conditions well and is well aware of what the pitches do, so he won't need time to settle in. This one matters because of what didn't happen: Trent Boult went to MI Cape Town at R1.5 million, along with Shimron Hetmyer at R1.5 million. Those were two of my main targets, and both are gone.

So Muzarabani is the new overseas pace option. Not a Boult, but a sensible plan B, and a cheap one.

Dayyaan Galiem, R375,000: the Quiet One

Galiem is the cheapest of the six at R375,000, and he's a South African all-rounder from Cape Town. Fun fact: this is a homecoming, because JSK bought him in the 2024 auction and he played 3 matches for us (1 wicket). After that he moved to Paarl Royals, where he played 11 matches and took 8 wickets, and he has also played for Western Province, Cape Cobras and Titans at home. In his Paarl days he was bowling with the new ball and finishing games with the bat, including a last-over six to win a match. A useful bench all-rounder at this price.

Jamie Overton, Wildcard: the Last Piece

After the auction, JSK confirmed Jamie Overton as their wildcard pick. A wildcard fee sits outside the salary cap, so it costs them nothing from the purse. And yes, he's a CSK player too, so another one for the Super Kings family.

Here's the thing: he has already shown what he can do with both bat and ball in yellow. In IPL 2026 for CSK he took 14 wickets in 10 matches, with a best of 4/18, and he scored 136 runs in 6 innings at a strike rate of about 158, with a 43 and a 37 off 16 balls. Numbers aside, he became a fan favourite quickly because of the passion and fight he plays with for the team. You can see he cares, and the Yellow Army noticed.

There's a nice angle too: his twin brother Craig Overton was also in this auction, and he was bought by Sunrisers Eastern Cape for R1.5 million, with no other team bidding. So one Overton will be wearing yellow at JSK and the other will be in the opposition dressing room. Overton vs Overton, anyone? He gives JSK a fast-bowling all-rounder, which is just what the squad needed after Boult went elsewhere.

The Full 19-Man JSK Squad

With the auction done, JSK's squad is complete. That's the nine players they kept, three overseas players signed before the auction, six auction buys and Overton as the wildcard, which adds up to 19:

RolePlayers
Batters and keepersAndries Gous (wk, overseas), James Vince (overseas), Faf du Plessis, Leus du Plooy, Rilee Rossouw, Matthew de Villiers (wk)
All-roundersDonovan Ferreira, Jason Holder (overseas), Kieron Pollard (overseas), Jamie Overton (overseas, wildcard), Dian Forrester, Jarren Bacher, Dayyaan Galiem, Jason Rowles (U23)
SpinnersPrenelan Subrayen, Akeal Hosein (overseas)
PacersBlessing Muzarabani (overseas), Janco Smit, Duan Jansen

Seven overseas players: Gous, Vince, Holder, Pollard, Overton, Muzarabani and Hosein. Twelve South Africans.

My Probable XI, With Backups

Only four overseas players can play in the XI. So the first question is who sits out, and honestly, it's a luxury problem. I've gone with Gous, Pollard, Overton and Hosein, and Vince, Holder and Muzarabani wait on the bench. This is my guess, not JSK's team, so don't hold me to it.

9SpinnerPrenelan SubrayenJason Rowles
10PaceDuan JansenDayyaan Galiem

Swap rules for the bench:

  • Pitch has pace? Muzarabani comes in for Hosein, and Subrayen is the lone spinner, with Forrester as an extra all-rounder.
  • Need more batting? Holder replaces Overton or Pollard. Holder is another all-rounder, so he covers both jobs.
  • Opener injured? Vince opens with Faf, and Gous keeps wicket.
  • Keeper injured? Matthew de Villiers keeps, and Ferreira has kept wicket for JSK too.
  • Young blood? Rowles is the U23 option for the lower-order spot.

The opening pair of Gous and Faf looks scary, with Pollard and Ferreira to finish. The question is the bowling: Overton, Jansen, Smit and Hosein with Subrayen is fine, but without Boult it's a bit thin. Which is why Muzarabani on the bench is the big swing, and Albie Morkel will have a nice problem deciding it.

What's Left for JSK

  • The squad is full. With Overton as the wildcard, all the slots are done.
  • When we see them: SA20 Season 5 starts on 17 January 2027.
  • Overseas count: by my count, Hosein, Holder and Vince were already signed, and Gous, Muzarabani, Pollard and Overton make seven overseas players. That is exactly the limit, so JSK are at the maximum.
  • The captain: still the big question. Faf, Pollard, or someone else? We'll see.
  • Boult and Hetmyer: now at a rival. Albie Morkel's side will have to face them.

My Take

Overall, it's an auction that's not too bad and not too good. Let me go department by department.

  • Openers: sorted. Gous was a good pick, and with Faf next to him and backups like Vince and de Villiers, there's cover if anyone gets injured.
  • Middle order: was already sorted with du Plooy, Rossouw and Ferreira.
  • Finishing: sorted too, and Pollard is the extra bonus on top.
  • Spin: fine. Subrayen was already there, Hosein is a proper option alongside him, and Ferreira can chip in with a few overs of spin too.
  • Pace: this is the worry. Powerplay and death overs are where T20 games are won, and that's where JSK look thin. We've filled the team mainly with all-rounders, and we rarely have a specialist pace bowler with real experience. Overton is an all-rounder, Muzarabani is the only out-and-out overseas quick, and Smit and Jansen are the others. Boult going to MI Cape Town is what really hurts.
  • Handling the overseas players: this is going to be the interesting part. JSK have seven overseas players (Gous, Vince, Holder, Pollard, Overton, Muzarabani and Hosein), and only four can play at a time. That's a good contingent, with real quality sitting on the bench, but it also means Albie Morkel has to get the balance right every match: who plays, who sits out, and whether the four should be batters, bowlers or all-rounders for that pitch. Rotate them well and it's a big strength. Get it wrong and you leave a match-winner on the bench.

So if JSK get the batting right and the all-rounders chip in, they'll be dangerous. The problem will come when they're defending big totals. With this batting line-up, JSK will put up some huge scores, and then the pace attack has to hold on to them. If one of those pace spots gets hit for 50 in the powerplay or leaks runs at the death, those big totals won't be safe, and it could be a long season. Albie Morkel has some thinking to do about who takes the new ball and who bowls the 19th over.

My verdict: a decent auction, not a great one. Gous, Pollard and Faf are solid, but I think JSK could have done better with the Galiem and Muzarabani picks. Those two slots were the chance to add the experienced pace and bowling depth the team needs, and they went to cheap options instead. Muzarabani may well prove me wrong, and we'll see how both do once the season starts.

Let me know in the comments which signing you like the most. And you can follow every one of them on the Super Kings Player Tracker.

Stay healthy stay yellow.
