The Yellow Army has a new man in the dugout. Chennai Super Kings have appointed Zaheer Khan as head coach ahead of IPL 2027, ending a search that began when Stephen Fleming and CSK parted ways in July after 18 years together. Eighteen years is a long time to be replaced, so credit to CSK for finding someone with real shoes to fill.
Zaheer, the 47-year-old former India left-arm seamer, arrives after a post-retirement career that has taken in the Indian team set-up, Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants. Reports describe it as his first full-time head coaching job, and The Indian Express understands he has a one-year contract with the option of an extension. One year, then. No pressure whatsoever.
What CSK Said
In its official announcement, CSK described Zaheer as a crucial part of India's 2011 World Cup campaign, with 92 Tests, 200 ODIs and 17 T20Is across a 14-year international career, plus 100 IPL matches before he moved into coaching.

Zaheer Khan said:
"It's an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL. As a cricketer, I have faced CSK on the field and have thoroughly enjoyed the contests. The atmosphere created by the Superfans at Chepauk make it even more special. I can't wait to join the legacy franchise with such a rich history."
Note the "thoroughly enjoyed the contests" line. The Superfans at Chepauk may have a slightly different memory of some of those contests, as we'll see below.
CSK's official announcement did not give a contract length or name any support staff. Those details come from The Indian Express, covered below.
Why an Indian Coach, and Why Now
Fleming's exit followed a third straight season without a playoff place. Once he stepped aside, CSK decided they wanted an Indian head coach and spent roughly two months talking to candidates. According to The Indian Express, MS Dhoni was handed the job of choosing Fleming's successor. He spoke to the candidates and, after returning from the US, held a final round of talks with the owners and a few of the contenders. Yes, the hiring process was also run by Thala. Of course it was.
Managing director KS Viswanathan told the paper that Dhoni was the one who suggested Zaheer, and that the cricket management team of Rupa Gurunath and Ruturaj Gaikwad agreed he fitted the role, given his IPL experience with Mumbai Indians and Lucknow. Hemang Badani was also in contention, but there were doubts over whether candidates would accept the terms on offer.
A coach with no other loyalties. The franchise reportedly wanted someone focused only on the IPL, with no ties to other teams around the world. Zaheer fits: he is co-owner of the Antwerp Anchors, a professional T20 franchise in the EUT20 Belgium league, but has no other global league connection. (Yes, that is a real team in a real Belgian league. Cricket really is everywhere now.) His calm, almost zen-like temperament was also seen as a good match for the relaxed CSK dressing room, where nobody has panicked since roughly 2008. Viswanathan said persuading Zaheer took some time: "We couldn't have got a better coach than Zaheer."
A tricky brief. With only one year left in the current cycle before the mega auction, and the new coach inheriting the existing squad, few candidates were keen on the job, per the same report. That is a polite way of saying it's a bit like being handed someone else's half-built IKEA wardrobe with a deadline. It also explains the one-year contract.
The choice of a bowler is a fun one. Our IPL 2026 bowling review found an attack that was tidy but toothless, short of wickets and undone by a hole at the death. Bringing in a man whose reputation is built on developing fast bowlers looks like a very deliberate plot twist.
The pairing also has history. Zaheer and Dhoni were together in India's 2011 World Cup win, where Zaheer finished joint-highest wicket-taker with 21 wickets in 9 matches. So this is, technically, a team reunion.

Two notes on that table. In 2017 Zaheer was first announced as India's bowling coach, but the role became a consultancy after new head coach Ravi Shastri pushed for Bharat Arun as the full-time bowling coach. (Sometimes the person you're announced as and the person you end up being are two different jobs.) And the LSG stint was one season: Zaheer joined in August 2024 to fill the mentor vacancy left by Gautam Gambhir, then parted ways with the franchise in September 2025.
If you're counting, that is a lot of dressing-room politics survived. He should feel right at home.
Zaheer Khan's IPL Bowling Record
Zaheer played 100 IPL matches for Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils and took 102 wickets. He was the 10th bowler and 8th Indian to reach 100 IPL wickets. He never played for CSK, which means he spent a whole decade scouting them from the other end of the pitch.
The numbers below come from CSK Den's ball-by-ball IPL database (run outs and retirements are not counted as bowler wickets), and they match the 102 wickets and roughly 7.6 economy in the official record. The database shows him bowling in 99 of those matches.

His career IPL bowling average is 27.27 and his strike rate is a wicket every 21.6 balls. His best figures were 4/17 against Chennai Super Kings for RCB at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on 18 May 2013, in a two-over spell. Read that again: his best IPL spell came against the team that just hired him. Somewhere, a CSK batter is having a very awkward flashback.
Zaheer Khan Against CSK
Across all venues, Zaheer bowled in 12 matches against CSK and took 16 wickets for 353 runs, an economy of 7.67 and an average of 22.06. That is better than his career average, and it includes the 4/17 above. Sixteen wickets against your new employer is either a great résumé line or an incredibly awkward first team meeting. Probably both.
Zaheer Khan at Chepauk (MA Chidambaram Stadium)
Here is where the story gets less cheerful for Zaheer. The Chepauk record is a visitor's record. Every IPL match he bowled at Chennai came for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2011 and 2012, and one of them was a Final.

That is 3 wickets at Chepauk for 127 runs, an economy of 7.94. Against CSK specifically at Chennai he took 2 wickets for 95 runs in 12 overs across three matches, and CSK won all three. The last of those was the 2011 Final, the night CSK won their second straight title, with Zaheer going 0 for 30 on a night the stands were very, very yellow. His one Chepauk win came in Qualifier 2 against Mumbai, which is the kind of win you don't get to celebrate much in Chennai.
The good news: he's on the right side of the whistles now. 💛
What Happens to the Rest of the Super Kings Family
The change lands in the middle of a wider reshuffle across the group, and it has been a busy few months.
- Fleming has since been named England men's Test head coach, as covered in our Joburg Super Kings coverage. CSK's loss is England's gain, and nobody expects him to become any less calm.

The Money Behind the Reset
CSK can afford a rebuild, and then some. The club's FY2026 annual report shows a standalone profit of ₹161.63 crore, sponsorship income up to ₹131.01 crore, and about ₹720 crore of cash and investments against almost no debt. (There's even a banquet hall in there. We still love the banquet hall.)
It also shows the cost of the slide Zaheer has been hired to reverse. Central Rights income fell ₹38.06 crore after the tenth-place finish in IPL 2025, and the filing confirms CSK did not reach the knockouts in 2026, so the next set of accounts will carry a second lean year. Player and support-staff pay already rose 21.4% to ₹155.11 crore in that report.
The financial argument for the appointment is simple: sponsors have kept paying through the decline, but the central-rights share depends on where CSK finish, and only results fix that. Somebody has to teach this team to win again, and the accountants would like it done by next March.
What to Watch Next
- The rest of the coaching staff. Zaheer has asked for time to pick his support staff and CSK have agreed, with Viswanathan saying he will get to choose. The Indian Express reports that Sridharan Sriram and Rajiv Kumar are expected to continue in their roles, while CSK are still looking for an overseas candidate for one coaching role, most likely batting coach. None of this is confirmed by CSK yet, so consider it a strong hint rather than a team sheet.
- Retentions and the December mini-auction. Zaheer's first job is to finalise retentions ahead of the mini-auction in December, per the same report, and CSK are under pressure to turn things around after missing the playoffs three seasons running. Welcome to the job! Here is your homework.
- Dhoni's future. Asked about it, Viswanathan said that as things stand Dhoni "is available as a player". The annual "will he, won't he" is officially back on the calendar.
